Text: Ancient Chinese Story
A boy named Chuan once lived in a small village in far-off China. Not a day passed without his playing some sort of trick: Sometimes he would pull the pigtails of the girls returning from school. Sometimes he would scare his mother, and once, he hid his father’s shoes. When his behavior became unbearable – his father sent him to the village elder to teach him to repent. Even Chuan realized that he had gone too far and agreed that the village elder would teach him repentance.
When Chuan entered the elder’s home – he saw a 100 year old man sitting next to an ancient table with many nails and a hammer on it. Chuan had expected to find books and notebooks – how can one possibly teach proper behavior without books? The old man observed Chuan’s questioning looks and explained to him as follows: Each time Chuan would do something bad – he would take a nail and hammer it into the wall; a nail for each misdeed.
After several days, the old man’s wall had 200 nails hammered into it. He then called Chuan and said to him: “See my son, how many bad things you have done.” Chuan was ashamed and said to him, “Yes, I have sinned many times. Help me to correct my ways.” The old man then said: “Each time you refrain from doing something bad, you may remove one of the nails from the wall.”
As the days passed, the wall was emptied of nails, and Chuan proudly called the old man. “See what a good boy I am! There are no more nails in the wall!”

Questions
What do you think about the Chinese guy’s solution?
Why do you think that the Chinese wise’s solution convinced Chuan to stop with his actions?
Do you agree with the idea that only by stopping to behave in a certain way we correct the bad action we did previously?
What’s the lesson we learn from the story in terms of making Tshuva?
Does the Chinese wise’s solution goes along with the Rambam’s Tshuva steps? Which solution would have been more suitable?
Concepts
Making Tshuva through action
The concept of Tshuva due to the Rambam
Methods
Divide the group in subgroups. Give to each group five bottles, paper, markers, glue and scissors. Every subgroup should pick five “sins” and come up with solutions for each one of them: practical solutions to make up for those sins. Every idea will be written on a paper slip that they will put within the bottle and on the bottle itself they’ll paste the sins themselves.
