Text: Moshe Yaalon / About David Granite
Words spoken by General Moshe (Boogi) Ya’alon in the one-year memorial service for Lieutenant David Granite. David fell in Lebanon as he was rushing to rescue his friends.
I’ve searched for the meaning of “גבורה”, and I’ve found different definitions in the dictionary: like strength, courage, might, as well as גבורה – a title for God, andגבורות - old age.
But I was looking for the גבורה that shows itself in the willingness of a young man to come out from behind the safety of a rock and into the hell of gunfire so he can charge and rescue his friends. I searched for גבורה that encompasses the willingness of giving up one’s life for his convictions.
I found that a גבור is strong, but was not satisfied, is a strong person, capable of lifting heavy weights a גבור? Is a well-muscled man a גבור? On this רש"י said: כח is strength of arm, גבורה – strength of heart. And well known is the quote from Avot – "איזהו גבור הכובש את יצרו”, the word גבור comes from the word להתגבר – to overcome. Overcome what? The יצר, the fear, the trepidation, overcome temptation, the immediate personal preferences…
And David overcame these all.
גבורה in the military service starts with everyday things, with the ability to overcome your yearnings in a cold morning, when you need to rise early and leave the warm sleeping bag. With the ability to overcome your desires when on one side of the equation is your own personal comfort, and on the other the needs of the group, in the decision which unit to join, whether to go to officer training etc. etc.
The ultimate taste of גבורה is the charge into enemy fire. Those few seconds, when you’re crouched behind the rock, with an enemy in short range in front of you, and you know that the right thing is to charge him. Or, you could stay in the safety of the rock and leave your injured friends under enemy fire, and you know that you’re their only chance, and you have the choice: to leave the safety of the rock or not, and you know you’re taking a mortal risk. David overcome all of these considerations, and leapt to the rescue of Eitan and Eliraz who fell before him, and fell with them.
One should stress: first you should ascertain that charging is the right course of action in the particular situations, lest we find ourselves teaching our soldiers to charge blindly, just for the sake of the charge and not because it is the correct tactical solution. That’s to say that the decision to charge is divided into two parts: the first, the decision that a charge is the correct solution to the problem, which a professional tactical decision. And the second, the decision to actually charge, which is a personal choice of גבורה.
The differentiation between these two levels of decision is vital, lest we find ourselves growing more and more baffled, and pay the price in human lives, by charging when charging isn’t appropriate, and vice-versa.
This distinction holds true on the national level as well. The muddlement of considerations on the scope of assessing the national condition, and fleeting emotions or preferences – is confusing and may cause more life-threatening mistakes.
David grew up in a house and environment where he absorbed what he absorbed, and when he found himself that fateful night I n Lebanon, and was called upon to make the decision, he realized that the correct decision was to charge forward, despite the risk, laying down his life.
Even when a person reaches גבורות – old age, there are many still many moments when he needs להתגבר – to overcome, but few are the moments where he is called upon for an act of גבורה – heroism, moments when only הגבורה - God above knows who is a גבור and who isn’t.
David didn’t reach old age, but proved, in a way that was seen not by God alone, his heroism.
