Questions
What's the relationship between the old lady and the nurse?
Why does the old lady prefer to give out the money to the nurse?
What is she gaining from the fact that she is giving out the money to the nurse?
Why does she swap between her slip of paper with the nurse's one during the night, when no one can see her, and she doesn't say to anyone what she did?
Methods
1. Prisoner's Dilemma. Who gains from the old lady's act? Do the following exercise:
Divide the group in two subgroups (Group A and Group B). Both groups are given the same goal – “To accumulate as many points as possible without helping or hindering the other group.” Give each group two cards: a red one and a blue one. Run a series of 10 decision rounds. During each 5 minute round both groups are told to make a group decision about the choice one of two colors – red or blue. See results chart below. Do not specify how they are to arrive at the decision within their groups. When each group has completed their decision, share results back to each group. As the decision rounds accumulate, players face the results of cooperation and betrayal. Periodically (after decision rounds 3 and 6) invite each group to send a negotiator to a neutral location, where the groups can't hear them. This is the only communication allowed between the groups. Generally each group is divided over both the instruction to give their negotiator (“bluff ‘em” vs “make a deal”) and how to interpret the negotiator’s “report.” What was their goal during the game? To gain themselves or to let the other group lose? Do we normally think of the way to make everyone gain or we just care for ourselves? What would happen if the world would be ruled from people that strive mainly for their personal gain?
